Holy Maria Infraportas

The collegiata of Holy Maria Infraportas is the most ancient of Foligno. It was named " Foris portam", but the necessary broadening of the town allowed, on the to lower some XIII century, the edificazione of the third and last city wall, for that the church is found between the old one and the new door of entrance of the town, named Holy Door Maria; ebbe therefore changed the name in Holy Maria Infraportas. Although the reorganizations and the alterations happened in the course of the centuries, the architectural installation preserve its primogenio you draft Roman.

To the first look it hits that the church is located under the road level; the entrance is preceded from a small portico that leans on four columns of I re-use. Above the portal, a tombstone in Latin remembers the year in which according to the tradition was been based on the basilica. It was 58 d. C. when arrived at Foligno the apostles Pietro and Paolo accompanied from Crispoldo, already bishop of Bettona and here honored bishop also of our town. So S. Maria Infraportas acted as Cathedral finchè not the basilica of San was built Feliciano.

Dwelling still the look on the outside one, on the right hand of the portico it it is emphasized a newsstand with the sinopia of an affresco of the Madonna of Pierantonio Mesastris. In the highest part of the facade an elegant window, done with material of I restore, replaces the original past rosone lost. Finally the belltower: is a tower campanaria, squared, that likely had not been built for the function that covers at present.

The inside, to three naves, carries the marks of the time; across the varied reorganizations, leaving from the hat of the proposition, where the stone on whose stone is preserved is recounted that celebrated the sacred office the SS Apostles Pietro and Paolo, until the abside it is warned the architectural evolution of the temple and itself "read" you fresco, a lot of which, considerable for quality, operates of the better.

That it strengthens across the faint light that penetrates from the small windows situated in the most raised part some church, the sense of the sacred one that coils the pilgrim, which, entering for a short visit, remains astonished, charmed and longing of to collect itself for a short spiritual reflection.
